Week One

Dustin vs Phil

Dustin shooting against Phil Morden.

Dustin arrived for Season Three of Top Shot along with the other fifteen contestants. Here, Colby Donaldson, the host of the competition, stated that a Preliminary Challenge would determine who would be on what team. In pairs, contestants would shoot head-to-head using the Smith & Wesson 500 Magnum at three targets. Whichever of the two could hit all of the targets before the other would be victorious and join the Blue Team, while the unvictorious became members of the Red Team. Dustin, being one of the youngest competitors, was assigned to shoot against another young competitor, Phil Morden as part of the last pair. Dustin and Phil hit the first target simultaneously. Phil then hit the second target just moments before Dustin. On the final target, both the contestants were forced to reload. However, Dustin was able to reload his weapon quicker than Phil and managed to hit the final target, resulting in his victory and a spot on the Blue Team. Colby then allowed the contestants to head to the house they would be living in during their stay on the competition. However, the members of Red Team arrived first, claiming dibs on the bottom bunks of the beds, leaving the only options for Blue Team to be the top bunks.

Later that day, the contestants arrived at the Shooting Range to participate in the first Team Challenge. Here, they noticed that there were a number of platforms with targets located in the distance. After all of the contestants got situated, Colby explained that for the challenge, two contestants at a time would have to get onto the different platforms for their team and destroy the targets with the Larue Tactical OBR. He then stated that, rather than using the ladders built onto the platforms to get onto them, the contestants would have to climb up a sixteen foot pole and carry it to the next station. Whichever team could finish off the course before the other would be victorious. Before participating in the challenge, both teams decided the shooting order, choosing Dustin and Billy Rogers for the first platform. Dustin made it up the pole before Billy, and once his teammate made it to the platform, aimed at his target and destroyed it in one shot. Billy was also able to destroy his target on the first shot, which gave the Blue Team a lead until the third station, where Jarrett Grimes and Sara Ahrens were having some struggle hitting their targets. However, at the fourth and final station, Blue Team was able to regain their ground, due to struggles on the Red Team. Alex Charvat, the last shooter for Blue Team managed to explode the final target, resulting in a Blue victory.

After both the teams returned to the house, the Red Team held a meeting while the Blue Team met in the kitchen. Here, Dustin read aloud verses[5] from the Bible that he found that morning, and jokingly said that when he read that, it made him think, "sucks to be red". Later that day, the Red Team left the house to nominate two people for Elimination. When they returned, it was revealed that Amanda Hardin and Mark Schneider were sent to the challenge. Later the next day, the Red Team left and then returned a short time later.
